My favorite Valentine’s Day

It was the first year we were married. My husband had lost his job right before the wedding so we were living on unemployment and I wasn’t expecting anything.

Hubby suggested we leave our 6 yr-old at my grandmother’s to play with my cousin and we would take a ride. We ended up at WoolWorth’s, where we each got a cup of coffee and a grilled cheese sandwich to split.

We sat there and talked and laughed until the woman at the snack bar had cleaned every table and turned the chairs upside down on all of them. She finally blinked the lights to get our attention and we got up and left.

The next day everybody was sharing their Valentine stories and I got the funniest looks when I shared my story about a cup of coffee and splitting a grilled cheese sandwich but that’s both of our favorite Valentine memory.

Experience speaks…

Today a friend of mine posted that her family is going through a health crisis and they need prayer. Worry and stress was overwhelming her. Yes, she believes in God and His healing power. But – from experience – I know how hard it is when you see a loved one suffering. It made me think of the saying that some things we go through are so we can help others. This is my reply to her:

Dear friend, I have an inkling of what you’re going through because my hubby is like yours in this respect. I know you know this but sometimes we need to hear it said to us – try not to let yourself get too upset over what the doctors say. My hubby is still not following doctor’s orders, but he is still here praising the Lord with me.

God has scheduled our guys time on this earth and He will keep them through it all, good health or bad health, until He is ready to call them home. We can only pray, take care of them as much as they’ll let us, and try not to put so much pressure on them (and ourselves) that we all get stressed out.

I worried, stayed on his back, and cried many tears, for many years, trying to get him to take care of himself. For a while I even let satan convince me that he did not love the family or he would try to take care of himself for our sakes. The truth I came to understand (working on accepting), is that we all have things we refuse to give to God and won’t believe we need to give to God in order to make things better.

I think it gets worse when we try to pressure them into doing better. That stubborn ‘Lucifer-streak’ just won’t let our loved ones give in to what they know is best sometimes. Give it to the Lord because he is God’s child and only God can change his heart – physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

You take care of you so you can be there for him when he needs you.

When satan reminds you he shouldn’t be eating that – if you cannot resist saying something to him leave the room; take a walk, play in your garden, go to your ‘quiet place’ and pray. Tell satan ‘I gave my hubby’s health and well-being to God, now go away kid – you bother me,’ in your best WC Fields voice.

You may have to do that 20 (or more) times a day but eventually, through prayer and standing on the word, you will get to the place where you can say nothing to him (because it does no good), and satan will see that you are not letting him bring you down.

Love to you and the family, HANG IN THERE!

I’m so excited…

I’ve already told you we are approaching our 37 year anniversary but let me tell you about our lovely anniversary celebration!

Two of my husband’s lovely sisters and their handsome hubby’s were able to come from Indiana to help us celebrate. Also, one (handsome?) brother and beautiful sister-in-law came!

They arrived Tuesday afternoon and we all went to the Golden Corral for a feast! When we got there I went to the  bathroom and when I came out I went ahead and got a plate. When I started to find the others I saw my sister-in-law coming toward me. I had mistakenly thought everyone had been fixing their plates while the were waiting for me. It turned out that they were all sitting at the table waiting for me to return from the restroom so we could all say grace and then get their food! We all had a good laugh about that…after we said grace and everybody got their food of course:).

Wednesday was the official anniversary and we got to choose what to do; we chose to go to the OmniMax theater.

We all had a GLORIOUS time at the OmniMax, down at Union Station – the Cincinnati Museum Center! We saw their Hidden Universe presentation and it was just beautiful! It made us all think of the AWESOME God who made this universe with all its beautiful galaxies, stars, and planets.

None of us had ever been to the OmniMax, and it was a thrilling experience. The screen is huge and domed and we felt as if we were moving to get different views of the story of the beginnings of the universe. If you have never been, it is an experience worthy of the less than $10 price.

Afterward, our family took us to dinner – our choice of restaurant – and we finally settled on Joe’s Crab Shack – another first for most of us! A couple of us wanted steak but we also had a variety of seafood; shrimp, bacon-wrapped shrimp, peel-n-eat shrimp, catfish, Cali-Mari, and crab cakes.

When we finished eating the family gave us gifts – as if them being here was not a gift! They gave us beautiful cards, a gorgeous picture frame, and the best gift when you’re broke – money.

Then the waiters gave me a ‘princess hat’ in pink, and gave my husband a ‘super-hero’ cape. And all the waiters sang to us while we kissed to the count of ‘5.’

By the time we left we were all tired, but happy.

Inquiring Minds Want To Know!

December 31, 1976, I was at the local motorcycle club for their New Year’s Eve party. I was sitting in a corner wondering ‘what am I doing here?’ I’m not a motorcycle babe but a childhood friend shared a ticket with me. I’ve never been a drinker so I had the drink I had been given when I came in…three hours ago! I had sipped it to keep it from over-flowing as the ice melted in the shot glass. Most people were there as couples but there were a few of us ‘strays,’ there alone. A few people had tried to talk to me but they soon gave up the effort; I just wasn’t in a ‘party mood.’ Even the guys quickly lost interest in the ‘pretty girl in the corner.’

If you had asked me, I couldn’t have told you why I was so…sad!

The next day I woke up late, still feeling sad and lost for no apparent reason. Something on the inside said, ‘call Flint.’ So I called my friend CeCe and told her I was feeling ‘blah,’ and she immediately called her husband to the phone.

‘Flint,’ I said, ‘I just feel so bad and nothing is wrong but…I feel like crying.’ The first thing Flint said was,’Can I come get you and take you to meet a friend of mine?’ I agreed and he came very shortly.

When we got inside he introduced me to someone I had seen but didn’t really know. (Later I realized I knew some of his relatives.) CV and I talked in the kitchen and I learned he was a preacher, like Flint. He asked some probing questions and our conversation ended with him leading me in the Sinner’s Prayer, and I gave my life to Christ!!!

I felt so wonderful!

CV told me I needed to share the fact that I had received my salvation with the people in the other room. I went into the living room and told them I just got saved and we all rejoiced!!!

That evening CV had a scheduled Bible Study in his home and that’s where I met my wonderful husband.

I thank God for my mother, who brought me up in church. I got away from the habit of going to church on Sunday’s and Prayer Meeting on Wednesday Night’s after I left her home. After I gave myself over to Christ (Father, Son, Holy Ghost), I found that letting Christ be the Head of My Life was not the same as just going to church on Sunday’s and Wednesday Night’s. I found out that letting Christ lead your life is more than just memorizing scripture and saying Hallelujah!

CV had a Sunday evening Bible Study in his home and I attended that first Sunday in 1977. Since I was ‘a new Christian,’ CV asked the young man sitting beside me to help me find the scripture we would be reading and studying from. After the Bible study, he took me and my daughter back home and I put her to bed. Then we got our bibles and sat at the dining-room table so I could ask him some questions.

My first question was, ‘since I am divorced, can I get married again?’ Now, I had no intention of ever getting married again but, ‘inquiring minds want to know.’ His answer, ‘I hope so because I want to marry you!’

August 6, 2014, it will be 37 years!!!

Care for others!

At the end of last semester my Sales and Contract Law professor gave the class a lottery ticket as a parting gift.
The proposal he made was that if he, or any of the five of us in the class, won the $10 million dollar jackpot we would donate $500 thousand dollars to charity. Only three of us; the professor, myself, and another classmate, wanted to agree to that. The other three wanted their families to be their charity.
That shocked me! I could not imagine having $10 million dollars and NOT wanting to donate to at least ONE charity.
I have many relatives and friends who work hard and long hours so of course I would help them out but come on…ten million and no charities besides people you know personally!
There are so many problems in the world; hunger, homelessness, poverty, no water in some lands, too much water in others, sweat shops, and other injustices in this world and all some people can think of is, ‘me and mine.’

God is good all the time!

It’s nearing the end of the month and for my hubby and me, it’s the time of month when food is low and so are funds. We praise God because we may only have beans and rice but those are good too.

I got on my scooter and went across the street to get some meat but when I got to the register I opened my purse and immediately saw that my billfold was not in it. I realized that when I had made the dentist appointment and had to get my insurance cards out; my billfold was right on the desk where I had left it!

So I told the cashier not to even ring it up because I had left my billfold at home and would have to come back. Before I could take off the woman behind me in line said, “Go on and ring it up, I’ll pay for it!”

It was one of those moments that just chokes you up; at least it did me:). I told her, “God bless you,” and went back home with a full heart. It was not the amount of money, $10.23, it was the fact that God had touched someone’s heart once more!
